Swindon Softball League today welcomes it’s sixth team – the Spitfires!
Following a successful league-wide recruitment drive over the off season and a surplus of players on the Bombers roster, the Bombers will field a second team this year, to be called the Spitfires.
“I am really excited we have been able to create a new team and to expand the League” explained Spitfires captain Fiona Mounsdon.
The choice of team name came easy for Fiona. In addition to being a similar name to that of their sister team Bombers, the connection goes deeper.
“The Spitfire was manufactured in the old Vickers factory which used to be located behind my house” explained Fiona.
“The Spitfires used to have test flights out of the factory and one crashed into a tree outside our house. You can still see the marks to this day.”
Sporting a striking new logo and blue jerseys, the Spitfires will benefit from the guidance of head coach Jel and will consist of a mixture of new and experienced players.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to Captain the Spitfires and show our new players how much of a valuable addition to the league they are” added Fiona.
“I know our more experienced team members will aim to guide and support our newcomers to the sport.”
This season will be the first time since 2011 that the league has had six teams and we hope the Spitfires grace our diamonds for many years to come!
