Week Twelve Recap: Spitfires and Dogders Post 59 Runs, Bombers Drop Two

Week Twelve saw three games played in a week for the second time this season. Monday night saw Las Panteras vs Bombers. The Bombers were back in action on Thursday night against Aries while Spitfires took on Dodgers

Las Panteras vs Bombers

On Monday night Bombers hosted League leaders Las Panteras on Diamond Two.

The previous meeting between the two teams (another Monday night fixture – this time back in Week Six) was a mercy rule victory by Las Panteras after 5 innings. In that game Las Panteras scored 14 runs in the 5th inning to end an otherwise close game.

This week the Bombers were hoping to prevent another big inning by the League leaders and keep the game close once again, however Las Panteras got on the board early with 16 runs over the first three innings while shutting the Bombers out over the same time period.

Despite winning the final two innings with a score of 2-1, Las Panteras had already built up enough of a lead to win the game by mercy rule after five innings.

Bombers vs Aries

The Bombers were back in action on Thursday night, this time hosting Title holders Aries on Diamond One. Their last encounter was a high scoring 31-11 game back in Week Four.

The Bombers held Aries to only one run in the first inning and, despite not scoring themselves, felt confident that if they kept the game close they would be in with a chance of winning the game.

Aries would go on to score seven runs over the next two innings while the Dodgers could only manage two of their own, both of which coming in the second inning.

Facing an 8-2 deficit going into the fourth inning, the Bombers were not out of it and did their best to limit the Aries offense, however the away team would score eleven runs in the fourth inning and tack on another four in the fifth inning.

The bombers could only manage another two runs over this time and the game ended after five innings with a scoreline of 23-5.

Fun fact: Spitfires’ pitcher Jeremy Bedford hit for the cycle in this game, only the second time this has happened this season.

Spitfires vs Dodgers

Spitfires took the Dodgers close back in Week Four, losing by only three runs. Still searching for their first win, Spitfires hoped for another close game.

Spitfires got off to a good start on Diamond Two, scoring four runs in reply to the Dodgers’ two in the first inning and scoring three after the Dodgers scored six in the second.

Facing only a one run deficit, the Spitfires couldn’t dodge an offensive output from the away team as they scored eight runs at the top of the third inning. The Spitfires would get shut out in the bottom of the third inning, however would go on to score five runs in the bottom of the fourth, but only after the Dodgers scored four runs themselves.

Both teams shut each other out in the fifth inning and this left the Spitfires facing an eight run chase over the final two innings. The Spitfires finished with a surplus of two runs after the sixth inning, which they won 7-5, however they could only reply with four runs to the Dodger’s five in the seventh, leading to a 21-28 loss with rookie runs factored in.
